About the area
The 1874 discovery of gold in the Black Hills led to the need for wagon and stage coach routes from the Union Pacific railroad to the site of the gold camps. The Greenwood Stage station near Bridgeport along the Sidney-Black Hills Trail still has in place intact foundations and undisturbed material deposits from its active use as a station. The Courthouse and Jailhouse Rock complex, near Bridgeport, consists of two prominent erosional remnant buttes, a portion of the Overland Trail dating from 1856 to 1869, an historic Plains Apache archeological site and and remains of the Courthouse Pony Express Station. The town of Bridgeport was originally Camp Clarke the site of an early bridge across the North Platte River. THis site was abandoned when the railroad was built in favor of a site, at a bridge closer to the railroad, which was now called Bridgeport. The Pioneer Trails museum has exhibits representative of the history of the area and in particular that of Camp Clarke. The Bayard Chimney Rock museum is a local history museum located in a refurbished railroad depot downtown Bayard and related to the Chimney Rock landmark .
