About the area
The establishment of a settlement at McCook all started around 1871 when a company started in Nebraska City to start a settlement somewhere in the Republican Valley. An an exploring and locating party was organized and reached and selected a town site on the West side of the Red Willow creek. However the State Legislature failed to organize a county in the area. as a result the original town company dissolved and homestead claims were entered on the town site. The town was finally established in 1882. The home of George W. Norris, who was a long term member of the US House of REpresentatives and Senate, is on the National Register of Historic Places and is now a museum. All of the home's original furnishings remain. The McCook Memorial Auditorium, completed around 1939, in addition to housing the city offices and council chambers also serves as an entertainment and cultural activities center. The city has several parks; Barnett, Elks, Karrer, Kelley, Norris and Russell. These parks combine to provide facilities such as a Bandshell, camping areas, Disc golf, fishing ponds, grills, horse shoe pits, picnic tables, sand volleyball courts, shelter houses, swimming pools, tennis courts and walking trails.
