Sherman County Courthouse

The county court and the district court (Box 456) are both located in the Sherman County courthouse and are each in their respective Eighth judicial district of Nebraska. You can get almost anywhere in Sherman county by taking SR 10, SR 58, SR 68, SR 82A or SR 92.

Loup City has the honor of being the first permanent settlement in Sherman County. Around 1871 two visitors to the area found it to be suitable for farming and living. By 1873 the town had sufficiently grown to require the formation of its first school district. The threat of an Indian uprising and destruction of crops by grasshoppers caused many residents to leave. However with improvement of conditions around 1875, many returned and within a year the economy of the town was greatly improved. Nearby Bowman lake and Sherman reservoir are state recreation areas with facilities for camping, playground, picnicking, swimming, boating, sailing, skiing, rowboating, hunting and fishing. Hunters can expect to find duck, pheasant, deer, dove, quail, rabbit and squirrel at the lake and anglers will delight in the large number of northern pike, walleye, catfish, crappie and white bass at both areas. In addition to Jenners park which has picnic shelters with electrical outlets and a large grill and playground equipment the city has a municipal swimming pool.
