About the area
The Sioux County Museum Complex consists of four buildings which house artifacts representing the history of Sioux County from its earliest days into the 20th century. The main museum building was as a newspaper office from 1924 to 1960. The Post Office building served in that capacity from 1905 to 1936 and later on as a commercial building. The district 60 schoolhouse is a frame building which replaced the original logs and rough boards structure. The House and Telephone Office was built around 1905. The owner's wife and daughters operated a telephone switchboard in their home until 1919 and the telephone room is furnished with a switchboard and phones similar to ones used in the early 1900's. The other rooms have Period furnishings. Some 20 miles South of Harrison the Agate Fossil Beds National monument has preserved bones of unique animals from the Miocene age. The Hitchcock Theater, the Cook Collection of Indian artifacts and a life size fossil diorama depicting life and death at the Agate waterhole 19 million years ago can be found in the visitor center. Hikers can reach early excavation sites or an unusual trace fossil by taking one of the two trails in the park.
