York County Courthouse

In the York County courthouse you can fid the county and the district court. They are both located in the Fifth judicial district of Nebraska. US 34 splits York county into upper and lower halves and meets US 81 in the vicinity of the city of York. IS 80 is South of 34 and parallels it. SR 69, SR 93A and SR 93B also meet 34.

The city of York was founded around 1869 and soon after became the county seat and a farm trading center. In its early years the city served as a stopping place for many travelers headed for the Oregon Trail. Merely three later the economy of York was prospering. The Burlington Railroad came to York around 1877 and a few years later the York Foundry was built. The Wessels Living History farm is a snapshot of what the agricultural scene was like in earlier times. The complex includes the completely restored and furnished Wessels home, a red timber frame barn, corn crib, machine shed, garage, chicken coop and a windmill typical of the 1920's. A more recently built is a modern tractor display building with many of the tractors, stationary engines and a combine that the latest member of the Wessels family restored. There is a still a modern farm operation here. York college located in the city of York awards Bachelor and Master's degrees in many different fields. If you want to see a bunch of cranes in one area come see the annual migration of the Sandhill cranes in nearby communities of Grand Island, Hastings and Kearney.
