About the area |
Ossipee is named for the Ossipee Indians, a tribe of the Algonquins. Poet John Geenleaf Whittier was a summer resident here. The present courthouse built in 1916 replaced the 1839 one destroyed by fire in 1915. It is now owned by the local historical society which is planning to repair and restore it and have it become and cultural center and museum. |
