The borough of Paramus is unique in many ways. It is home to the only zoo in Bergen County. Paramus is also the proud home of 5 major shopping centers and malls. A lot of people from in and around come to shop in Paramus. Zero sales tax on clothes is an extra incentive to shop here. Paramus Park mall displays a statue of a huge turkey, it is said that the word "Paramus" meant 'land of the wild turkey' in the Native Indian language. The other connotation of this is that Paramus had a very fertile land which could be home to wild turkeys. Paramus history is a chronicle that is rich in tradition. Dunkerhook in the borough of Paramus (meaning black in Dutch) was predominantly an African-American community in the early 18th century. The Paramus Museum Collection has many cataloged photographs dating back to the 18th century. Routes 4,17 and 208 intersect at the heart of this town, and the Garden State Parkway runs through as well.
