The town of Bayonne is home to nearly 62,000 residents and forms the southern tip of Hudson County in the State of New Jersey. It is believed that the French settlers named this town Bayonne after the city of Bayonne in France. Other theories suggest that the town might have gotten this name because it was 'Bay-on' meaning literally on the shores of two bays. The famous Bayonne bridge was once considered to be the longest steel arch bridge in the world. The new river George Bridge built in 1978 displaced it from it's first position. The town has 10 elementary schools, many parks and recreation centers, several shopping centers, medical facilities and private gyms. Bayonne's population is far more diverse than it's neighbors, with each group contributing something to the town's present-day cultural character. Bayonne's southern border is closer to Staten Island than any piece of land in the state of New York.
