A crowded city of 5000 people, Salem City's population is much more diverse that it's neighbors. The Salem river flows through the city. It is believed that 'Salem' comes from the Hebrew word 'Shalom' meaning peace. Not to say that there is no crime in the city. The city has its share of crime, but residents feel things have gotten much better in the last decade. The Salem Main Street Program is an organization that has worked incessantly for the betterment of the downtown region and of the community on the whole.
