Apparently there were occupants of this county over 10,000 years ago as evidenced by the discoveries linked to "Folsom Man". Anzai, Plains Indians, Pueblos and Spanish followed. Around 1841 the early land grants to tracts in this county were made. The new Colfax county was established at the beginning of 1869. The NRA Whittington center is located at the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
