The original Route 66 made its way through Santa Rosa on its local streets and dirt roads. Gas stations, restaurants, cafes, camps, motor courts, motels and hotels were established to cater to the motorists who traveled on this fabled road. In the late 1930's the road was realigned, however turn of the century architecture can still be seen in a movie theatre, banks, barber shops, drugstores, pool halls, dance halls, bars, cafes, hotels, grocery stores and cafes on Fourth street which was Route 66 before the realignment. The city is known as "Oasis on Route 66" and "Jewel of New Mexico". Among the many lakes in the area, of special interest is Blue Hole; an artesian bell-shaped lake with crystal clear blue water, a temperature of 60 degrees year round and 91 feet deep. You will need a dive permit to make use of this watering hole.
