The main contributors to the economy in this county are ranching and carbon dioxide production.
However, the major employers are the schools, federal, state, county and local governments. When the Dawson railway section of the Southern Pacific railroad was laid around 1906 from Tucumcari to the coal fields in Dawson; the Mosquero area was a settlement for the construction workers. In what was to prove a continuous source of business, a huge carbon dioxide gas field was discovered beneath Harding County at the Bravo Dome giving rise to the dry ice industry during the 1920's and the 1930's. There aren't many people living in Mosquero, under 100.
