| About the area |
Lovington was founded at the dawn of the 20th century. Around 1917, when Lea county was created from parts of Chaves and Eddy County; Lovington was designated as the county seat. The city's economy was originally based on ranching and farming until the discovery of oil around 1928. Oil production was low until the discovery of oil in the Denton Pool in 1950 which shaped the economy of Lovingon. More recently the dairy industry has begun to play a major part in the economy. Lovington now has a population of about 11,000. The city is proud of the Lexington HS football team "Wildcats" which has won 18 state championships. The city's aquatic center is a great place to spend those warm Summer afternoons with its major slide, other play features and special kiddie pool items. |
