Ruidoso lies in the Sacramento mountains at an elevation of approximately 7,000 feet. The village took on the name of the river that runs through it, the Rio Ruidoso or "Noisy River". This river starts on the Sierra Blanca rising over 12,000 feet above the town. The mountain can be seen from anywhere in town and together with the surrounding Lincoln National forest provides many opportunities for hunting, fishing, horseback riding, kite flying, backpacking, hiking, camping, skiing, tubing and sledding. The Lincoln County Community theater provides live theatre using local talent to stage dramatic and musical productions.
