About the area |
Prior to the Gadsden Purchase of 1853, Deming was a port of entry on the US-Mexican border. Although the 1881 date of the Silver Spike driven here commemorating the joining of the Southern Pacific with the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe railroads, creating the second transcontinental railroad in the United States is uncertain; a ceremony was held in 1981 to commemorate the occasion. The Deming-Luna Mimbres museum is housed in a building built as a National Guard armory. Troops engaged in the U.S. defense of the U.S./Mexico border had quarters in the still unfinished building. Having served as a community center and USO activity center for military personnel and now a museum whose exhibits include quilts dating back to 1847, Native American artifacts, the arts, antique cars, military artifacts and exhibits, historic liquor decanters, over 2500 bells and a room full of dolls. On the same street as the museum, you can find the old Custom House which was the home of a succession of residents. One of them was the Collector of Customs under President Grover Cleveland and used his home as the Customs office. |
