About the area |
It seems like a lot of the counties in New Mexico were created by taking parts from other counties and Roosevelt is no different having been created from parts of Chaves and Guadalupe counties. It was named for Teddy of Rough Riders fame. A little to the North of Portales you can find Oasis State park which has cottonwood trees, shifting sand dunes, and a small fishing lake. Apparently the fishing lake, stocked with trout, is a big draw for anglers. A walk on one of the trails here offers a glimpse of great blue heron, quail and western sandpiper. The High Plains Quilt festival is held at the Jake Lopez Community Center on the Roosevelt County Fairgrounds in October |
