About the area |
Over 2,000 years ago the Anasazi "basket makers" lived in the area in what is now known as pit houses and then in in pueblo structures. After them came the Navajo, Jicarilla Apache and Utes. In the late 1700's the Spanish passed through on their way to settle in the Eastern part of San Juan County. Farmington was first settled as a community by pioneers from Animas City, Colorado in the 1870's and rapidly became a farm and ranch area. The Farmington Museum & Visitors Center at Gateway Park has on display different exhibits related to the history of the area’s cultures, traveling exhibits ande national and regional juried arts shows. Three of the permanent exhibits in the museum are "From Dinosaurs to Drill Bits", "Farmington: 100 Years of Change" and "Three Waters Trading Post".
