About the area
The name means "place where you drink water" This town is near Pojoaque Pueblo, an Indian Reservation. The pueblo was occupied and abandoned many times. However when the the Commissioner of Indian Affairs requested the return of tribal members to return to the area around 1934; members of the Tapia, Villarial, Romero, and later the Gutierez/Montoya families received land grants in the Pueblo land base. Approximately two years later the Pueblo of Pojoque became a federally recognized tribal reservation. The town has people of many ethnic backgrounds. On Pojoaque’s Feast Day in December and Reyes Day in January annual traditional dances are held on the plaza. Be sure to dine at Sopapilla Factory Restaurant for authentic New Mexican cuisine.
