Socorro is home to the Bosque del Apache and Sevilleta National Wildlife refuges. The Festival of the Cranes held at Bosque del Apache refuge in November is a great opportunity for photographers and bird lovers to take advantage of the many workshops at this event. If you don't mind traveling a bit of a distance down IS 25 to the South of the county you can visit the El Camino Real Heritage center. El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro was the road that brought thousands of Spanish and Mexican colonists to New Mexico beginning just before the 17th century. This museum has exhibits and artifacts of the history and heritage of this famous trail and life in Mexico and New Mexico during the 1600's colonial era. You can't help but be impressed by the Plaza de Zacatecas and tienda or store exhibits.
