About the area
With the arrival of a family in the area who homesteaded their land around 1887; this city got its start and its name. They were settlers from Iowa and their land was actually a little over a mile West of where the city is now located. Around 1903 the Santa Fe Central railroad brought a line into the area which several years later became the Santa Fe Central railroad. The railroad brought homesteaders from Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Iowa who created farms. With the increase in activity the railroad built a depot which established the town and that first homesteader built the first store. Be sure to visit the Moriarty Historical Society and museum. This museum has on display items from its collections which are representative of role and significance of different peoples who occupied the area, the effects of Western expansion on the area, lifestyles and living environments of people and families in the area and the structural and architectural evolution of the area. This small community has a municipal airport.
