About the area

The Herzenstein Memorial Museum is the official Santa Fe Trail Interpretive Center. This building was used from time to time as a youth center and meeting place until the generosity of a resident of Houston, Texas contributed funds to make the change to a museum possible. The museum was named in his family's, who were business and civic leaders in the early years of Clayton, honor. The historic Eklund Hotel built in the 1890' and frequented often by travelers to the Southwest; has been restored with extensive renovation to the original bar and lobby and once again welcomes guests. This building began as nothing more than a two-story rock building with the addition of an elaborately carved bar a couple of years after its construction.
