About the area
After aquiring Lester Brothers Boot & Shoe Co. in 1890, Henry B. Endicott took former Lester foreman George F. Johnson as partner in 1899, and Endicott - Johnson became an industrial giant. Committed to providing recreational facilities for his employees and their families, Johnson donated land for churches, built parks, libraries and installed the 6 wooden carousels - created by the Allan Herschell Co of North Tonawanda - throughout the area. Located in the Endicott-Johnson Industrial Complex, C.Fred Johnson Park hosts the world's largest carousel (1923). Of the 6, this is the most elaborately carved. Part of the town of Union, Johnson City is a combined urban-suburban community, located near the convergence of 3 interstate highways - I-88, I-17 & I-81. Originally called Lestershire, it boasted 3 fire companies - JR Diment Chemical Fire Engine Co (1889) Independant Hose Co. #1 (1892) & G.Harry Lester Hook & Ladder Co #1 (1894). Unlike other fire companies of the time, that competed for clients, these three worked together, and later merged into the Lestershire Fire Department. In 1916, Lestershire village became Johnson City.
