The Chenango Canal, begun in 1837, reached Vestal by 1864, replacing Crane's Ferry. In 1888, the Delaware Lackawanna & Western RR arrived. The USS Vestal was commissioned as a collier in 1909 - and was at Pearl Harbor 12/7/41. Pres. Teddy Roosevelt gave a speech from Batcher's Inn, in the hamlet of Vestal Center. Max Schilling set up his training camp in Twin Orchards for his 1930 title bout with Jack Sharkey. The Vestal Train Station - in service from 1882 - 1959 - was moved to its present site next to the town library and became the Vestal Museum, housing permanent & short term exhibits. And check out #2 Pumphouse Rd - in 1844, Jacob & John Rounds built the Drovers' Inn; by 1930 it became Ackley Funeral Home. Next, Bowles Convalescent Home took residence in 1940. By 1950 it was an apartment house. Until 1987, when it was renovated and restored to its 1840's appearance, and became - a restaurant. Talk about returning to your roots. Formerly known as Crane's Ferry, then Vestal Mills, the Town of Vestal separated from the town of Union in 1823. Ethnically diverse, what began with 2 religious groups in 1820 has grown to represent over 20 different religious organizations. In 1953, Supervisor Leland Jones founded a committee to create parks & recreational spaces. Vestal now boasts 24 parks, including The Rail Trail, the Arnold Park Nature & Exercise Trail, Choconut Creek Flood Wall & the 304 acre Jones Park.
