Last town formed, in 1867, from Chemung, Elmira & Southport. Named for the home of Henry Clay. Major tobacco growing & shipping until 1858. Two of the largest island in the Chemung River are Baldwin Island & Big Island - except during flood season. The Chemung River flows through the town of Ashland, the village of Wellsburg & the hamlet of Lowman - as well as NYS routes 14, 17, 367 & 427. Drive responsibly.

Mar 26 2011 01:43:42: This state highway I86 has many speed traps that go from 65mph to 55mph in a matter of feet and the State Highway Nega-RobinHoods are right there to trap you and then lie = you have no recourse unless you have lots of money and can make it back to the rinkydink town! I hope that soon someone is able to take this to the Supreme Court level and stop this madness!
May 13 2010 22:39:42: why is it that the clerks hours start at 9:00 am , and i show up to pay traffic ticket fine and the building is locked up? this is the second time i have had this happen. first time i was late the state revokled my licence! this is so not right to the citizens who pay their salery for a service but the service is never there!!!
