Schroeppel town was formed in 1832. The name derives from the Schroeppel family who were early land owners of the area. The Schoeppel homestead (1818) is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Town of Schoeppel is bordered by Oswego River southwest and has Erie Canal in the southern border. Interstate 481 runs through the town between Fulton and North Syracuse. Contained within the town is the Village of Phoenix. The village never fully recovered from a 1918 conflagration which destroyed two thirds of the village- 80 buildings. A drawbridge in Phoenix was used as a set in the 1980's slasher movie "Happy Birthday to Me" because the two sides could be raised and lowered independently and it was ideal for vehicle jumps.
