Named for the Seneca's Kah-ni-sti-oh, Canisteo is rich in Indian lore. Site of the World Famous Living Sign, noted both Ripley's Believe it or Not, and the Registry of Historical Places. Founded in 1796, Canisteo is one of the original towns in the county, including the hamlets of Adrian, Bennetts, Brown's Crossing, Canisteo Center & South Canisteo. The Canisteo River flows through the north part of town; NYS 248 & NYS 36 intersect.
