| About the area |
Named for Sgt. William Jasper, military hero at Fort Moutrie, South Carolina. Early settler Nicholas Prutsman & his family camped out under an oak in 1807 until their cabin was raised. Near NYS Rtes 412 & 36, the Town of Jasper was formed in 1837 from the towns of Troupsburg & Canisteo, & includes the hamlets of Five Corners, Jasper & Hampshire. The Tuscarora Creek flows through here.
