About the area
During the American Revolution, Peekskill was attacked and burned by the British in 1777. Peekskill is the birthplace of NY Governor George Pataki, who was also a former Peekskill mayor, State Assemblyman and Senator. Actor Mel Gibson was born in the local hospital in Peekskill, leading to a life of fame and controversial comments. Peekskill serves as the setting for the girls' boarding school in the 70's sitcom, "Facts Of Life". In Oct 1992, a meteorite fell in Peekskill, punching a hole in the trunk of a car as it landed.
