Ashtabula actually means “a river of many fish”. But due to the industrial abuse neither the fish nor the river lasted nor today does it just remain as a super fund site. Walnut beach is near the harbor and if you get bored at Walnut beach just walk across the road and you get to Lake Shore Park which are the two public beaches in Ashtabula. Ashtabula was mentioned by poet Carl Sandburg in his poem which was called “Crossing Ohio When poppies bloom in Ashtabula”!
