About the area |
Clermont in French means a Clear Mountain, but to your surprise you will never find mountains near here. The people however claim that it was named for a place in France. Clermont is towards the northwest of Ohio and next door to Cincinatti and a lot of early settlers from the neighboring states like Kentucky, Virginia came here to call it their home. However it had an important role to play in American history as it had one of the first stops on the underground railroad and also apparently housed a number of slaves and refugees during the times of war. Even the Cherokee tribe had to live in Clermont for a while before they settled in the Appalachians. |
