About the area

In the late 19th century one part of Main Street Baker City was a bawdy place which had five saloons and several brothels and yet it also had an opera house and an ornate hotel which was considered one of the finest in the West. For an exciting weekend afternoon; take the Sumpter Valley Railroad from nearby McEwen to the historic mining town of Sumpter. This railroad operates steam-powered excursion trains on a narrow gauge rail.
