Fort Stevens State Park, located in the Astoria area, is Oregon's largest campground. Visitors to this park can see the the wreck of the "Peter Iredale" and use Coffenbury lake, the expansive picnic facilities, nature trails. Facilities are available for boating, camping, biking, horseback riding, and swimming. Fort Stevens was a part of the military defense installation at the mouth of the Columbia River. The fort served for approximately 84 years, beginning with the Civil War and closing at the end of World War II. It now serves as a park occupying over 3,700 acres. Remnants of the old gun batteries can be seen in the area at the mouth of the Columbia river. |
