About the area

In the third quarter of the 19th century, a settler and his dog chasing a bear discovered the caves of Cave Junction which soon became an attraction. and Toward the end of the 19th century developers opened the caves as a commercial enterprise. A few years later President Taft declared the caves a National Monument. After W W I I Lumber production became the major industry in the area. This industry has since dwindled to the one remaining lumber mill in the valley.
