Yaquina Bay State Recreation site is located at the Southern end of Newport and on Yaquina Bay. The historic lighthouse, located here, has been restored and is open to the public. The area near the beacon is populated with spruce and pine. Located nearby is the The Oregon State University's Hatfield Marine Science Center which serves as a laboratory facility for resident scientists and a base for oceanographic studies as well as a classroom for students. Also nearby is the Oregon Coast Aquarium where are housed over 500 species of animals in both indoor and outdoor exhibits.
