About the area |
Toledo with a population of approximately 3,500 is located on the Yaquina River. The Homestead Act allowed for the establishment of Toledo in the 1860's. A nearby railroad was completed towards the end of the century and soon after Toledo’s downtown had a waterfront hotel, a saloon and feed stable, a blacksmith’s shop and other businesses. The first school followed and several churches were built. The products of the sawmills and finished goods were being shipped by boat or by rail. Economic decline starting in the 1920's and continuing into the 1950s had the town fighting for its survival. Fortunately the Georgia-Pacific Corporation has remained loyal to the community and is the only mill that remains in operation, serving as a backbone of the town’s economy.
