| About the area |
The history of Tillamook actually begins in the late 18th century when an American sailing sloop anchors in Tillamook Bay. However the first settlers in the vicinity did not arrive until the middle of the 19th century. In the succeeding years afterward more families arrived to make their homes. One of these later settlers laid out the town that would become Tillamook and opened the first store. This was soon followed by the establishment of the first post office in town and the selection of the city as the county seat. Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint, located 10 miles west of Tillamook, is where you can see the Cape Meares Lighthouse, which has a height of over 200 feet, and the annual whale migration. |
