| About the area |
About nine miles east of Umatilla lies Hat Rock State Park, on the south shore of Lake Wallula. Lewis and Clark passed through this area. Cottonwood and black locust trees offer shade to cool off in the Summer. Waterskiing, jetskiing, swimming, and boating are some of the activities available here. There's a pond stocked with rainbow trout and waterfowl are in evidence throughout the year. Construction of McNary Dam and Hinkle Terminal, a Union Pacific rail yard, south of Hermiston,
was significant in the economic growth of Hermiston.
