About the area |
A freight hauler, a hopeful gold prospector and an enterprising gentleman hoping to cater to the gold miners were the first to settle in the area of Pilot Rock in the 1860's. The establishment of its Post Office was followed shortly thereafter by the development of a plan for the city. The city's name came from a landmark rock formation seen by wagon trains on the Old Oregon trail. Climbing this rock formation is a poular activity and rewards climbers with a look at the inside of a volcano. Timber and agriculture are the major bases of Pilot Rock's economy and it is home to a lumber and pole mill. |
