Just west of some mountains, Westmoreland County was founded in the 1770s. Governor Penn designated a tavern in Hannastown as the first courthouse. In the mid 1780s, the Court changed to Newtown, now Greensburg, where the courthouse remains. Seizing an entire block, the Court is big and impressive. Spiked bars guard the windows, while Romanesque engravings, such a lion head, adorn the walls. Nearly 200 feet from the ground, the building is crowned with a golden dome where the American Flag waves to its citizens, even to those who live miles away.
About the area
Greensburg lies approximately 30 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. Historical churches and 1950-style shops line the streets downtown. The residential areas of Greensburg cover all economic classes, from the impoverished trailer parks scattered along backroads, to the middle-class housing developments just outside of downtown, to the upper-class gated communities near the outer borders. Several celebrities have hailed from Greensburg, such as pro-golfer Rocco Mediate and world-record holder for the largest torso and biceps Isaac Nesser. Greensburg also has had some growth, mainly due to recent renovation, for Greensburg, like many of the industrial suburbs of Pittsburgh, had long been in economic turmoil from the decline of the steel mills and manufacturing industry.
