About the area |
Oakridge is located at the foot hills of the Appalachian Mountains. Apart from scenic beauty, Oakridge has a rich historical prominence in the United States of America. When the Japanese bombed the Pearl Harbor, three cities were chosen to build nuclear and atomic weapons as a part of the Manhattan Project. Oakridge was one of them and the other two were in New Mexico and Washington. As long as this atomic plant was here Oakridge never existed and was a top secret place. However six years later they moved the plant and today Oakridge is open to all visitors. |
