Approximately 450 families reside in this city which was started as a health resort with mineral baths in the 1840s. By the early 1900s, there was a change in focus from one liquid to another with the discovery of oil and it is still the site of the oldest continuously producing oil field in the world. The ethnic make up of Sour Lake is 94.36% White Non Hispanic, 3.18% African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.42% Asian with the remaining percentage made up of other racial groups.
