About the area
In the late Spring of 1859 a group of Mormon settlers began a settlement near the banks of the Logan River building houses with the logs they harvested. They were followed by a second group who plowed land and planted wheat. By the Spring of the next year the houses in the settlement close to 100 and had wide streets. In addition to agriculture, the main contributor to the economy, were added a sawmill, a lime kiln, a tannery and a carding mill. Logan residents founded Utah State University around 1888. The Utah Festival Opera & Musical Theater festival is held at the Ellen Eccles theater for Ellen Eccles Theatre for five weeks during the Summer. The Old Lyric Repertory company is a stages performances in the historic Caine Lyric theatre in Logan putting on four shows in through the summer months of June, July and August.
