The building of a bridge over the Bear river around 1869 and if you were one of the residents of Clarkston you might have rushed over it to form a new town; later to be joined by other residents of your old town. This new settlement was originally called New Town. At first the residents who remained in the original town and those who moved to the new town agued over the name Clarkston; however this was soon resolved with the new town becoming Newton. There are two reservoirs near Newton; Newton Dam, North of the city and Cutler to the South.
