From its very beginning as a railroad switch or siding on the railroad system between Los Angeles and Salt Lake City as Aiken; it went on to take several names. The next name was Melville, then Burtner and finally Delta in the Fall of 1911. Although the first house in town was erected in the Spring of 1907 settlers for a time lived in tents on their free land. They finally built homes when it was possible to haul in lumber from elsewhere in the county.To celebrate the fact that thousands of Lesser Snow Geese gather annually during the month of February in the area around Delta before continuing their migration Northward, the city holds its Snow Goose festival. This event is a time for colorful competitions such as the Wild Goose Chase walk or run, the Dunk, Dunk Goose Water plunge, the Snow Goose arts and craft fair, the Snow Goose Quilt show, Wild Duck and Goose call, the Goose Dynasty Look Alike contest and the Wild Goose Skeet shoot.
