About the area |
Fillmore was given its name by an act of the Utah Territorial Legislature around 1851 and for a time enjoyed its place as the territorial capital of Utah. A remnant of the city's place still exists with the original Statehouse building which is the oldest existing governmental building in the state. This building is now a museum. On the grounds of the museum, which is located in Territorial Statehouse State park, there is an old rock schoolhouse and historic cabins. The museum has on display many exhibits with the basement holding military weapons, pioneer-era tools, Native American artifacts, portraits, jail cell, wood and stone working tools and printing press and the main floor Governor Brigham Young's office, a Presbyterian school teacher's quarters, Governor Jon Huntsman Jr. room, musical instruments and books, pioneer-era china and pottery and a textiles display. |
