About the area |
Various settlements were established around this area of the Salt Lake valley around 1848. Around 1869 when bodies of ore were found at Park city and in the Little Cottonwood canyon, smelters were built in Murray (then known as South Cottonwood) one year later because of its central location and access to the railroad. The city today is quite large with a population of over 46,000. The Park center is equipped with basketball, volleyball and pickleball courts, a running track, cardio area, studios, two swimming pools and game rooms for billiards and table tennis. The Murray Cultural Arts and History department presents plays, touring productions and concerts at Murray high school and maintains the Murray City museum which is located in city hall. The museum tells the story from 1870 to 1950 with its exhibits and displays. |
