From what was known as the “State of Deseret” the Legislative Assembly officially created Great Salt Lake County at the beginning of 1850. Shortly thereafter the United States Congress created the Utah Territory. Almost two years later the Salt Lake county government held its first formal meeting. Salt Lake city is the home of the Utah Jazz basketball team of the National Basketball Association. It is also home to the University of Utah, a school which offers a large number of undergraduate and graduate programs including a law school and a medical school. The Utah symphony gives a series of musical performances at Abravanel hall in Salt Lake city.
