In the Spring of 1886 a search party from Bluff arrived in the area now called Monticello to find a town site close to Blue Mountain and its mountain streams. Although the area, generally the South and North forks of Montezuma Canyon, was already being used by a cattle company the pioneers started planting crops and laid out a town plan. In the Summer of the next year when the pioneers were settled in; disputes with the cowboys began over the rights to the water in the area. The pioneers learning that the cattle company had no legal rights to the water and laid claim to two forks of the main water source and began to grow wheat, oats and potatoes. They also began construction of a new town which they first called North Montezuma and then Hammond and subsequently named for Thomas Jefferson's estate. The Frontier museum, located in an historic barn in downtown Monticello, has exhibits including early telephones, minerals from the area and early twentieth century clothing
