About the area
Sanpete county lies across the Colorado Plateau and the Great Basin The creeks on the Eastern slopes of the high Wasatch Plateau drain into the Colorado River system. Acting on an invitation from Wakara, chief of the Utes who lived in the area, Mormons stared arriving in Sanpete county around 1849. This friendship did not last very long and the Utes were engaged in the Walker war with the Mormons from 1853 to 1854 causing the the settlers to abandon their homes or built forts for their protection. The settlers worries continued during the Black Hawk War from 1865 to 1868, which was characterized by a serious and prolonged period of guerrilla raids. Eventually the county came to be settled by Danes, Swedes, and Norwegians. The economy is largely dependent on agricultural at first serving as Utah's granary and later expanding into cattle.
