About the area
Pioneers looking for farmland first came to Payson around 1850. They soon created a city and more than seventy years later established a high school, later replaced by the Brigham Young Academy, and ten years after that built an opera house. Towards the end of the 19th century a factory making horse collars was built in Payson. The Peteetneet museum and Cultural Arts center, located in the old Peteetneet School, has on display in various rooms exhibits depicting the history of the area. They are the School, Freedom, Fashion, Historical Society, Lee and Jean Staheli Western rooms as well as the permanent art exhibit, Peteetneet art gallery, the Orson P. Daniels photograph collection, Huber blacksmith shop, Austin Henry History of Writing and Communications, Pioneer and Indian artifacts, Nebo Stake Tabernacle display and Payson Homecoming Royalty display. The Rose Garden and West walkway on the grounds have beautiful floral and plant displays and the amphitheater is the scene of concerts.
